Douglas R. "Poppy" Simmons, 67, of Hudson, NY, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, NY.
Born April 14, 1943 in Rhinebeck, NY where he raised, he was the son of the late Harmon and Ethel (Day) Simmons, Sr.
Poppy worked for many years as a truck driver, retiring in 1999 from Ginsberg's Food Company in Hudson, NY.
He loved to play softball, go hunting, and to bowl, and was a loyal fan of both the Colts and the Dodgers.
Poppy is survived by his 2nd wife: Ethel L. Simmons of Hudson, his 4 children: Troy Simmons of Hudson, Daniel (Denise) Simmons of Clermont, Christopher (Katrina) Simmons of Hudson, Shelley (James) Ogden of Livingston, 2 step children: Thomas Chizotti of Red Hook, and Veronica (George, Jr) Chizotti-Shook of Philmont, 5 brothers: Richard of Poughkeepsie, Artie of Red Hook, Harm of Staatsburg, Robert and Albert both of Hyde Park, 3 sisters: Helen Shanley and Patty Simmons, both of Hyde Park, and Cathy Carlin of Russell, NY. 23 Grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces & nephews also survive him.
His 1st wife, Sharon (Stone) Simmons, and a son, Eric, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 PM on Thursday, July 29th, at Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook. The Reverend Fred C. Cartier will officiate. Private inurnment will be at Mount Adnah Cemetery, Fulton, NY at a later date.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, prior to the memorial service, from 6-8:30PM.
